31 Days of Costumes
31 Days of Costumes
The year is 2013. The month is October. Halloween is coming. Fall is falling. We are wearing costumes every day this month. Anyone can wear a costume on October 31st or another day or two to celebrate this most spookiest of holidays, but who among us will wear a costume every day? These guys. Of course, we work for a living so our costumes may be somewhat limited, but nonetheless we will be costumed.
Day 1: Batman and Christian Grey
Courtney: I decided I was going to be Batman to kick off 31 days of costumes because what is more awesome than Batman? The answer, of course, is nothing. I have a Batman t-shirt and decided to pair it with my black skirt. I was tempted to wear my black cuddly duds (aka leggings) and black leather boots to make it truly authentic, but that seemed a bit too much for a working stiff. As I was searching for my black flats, I happened upon a yellow belt and, though it isn't a utility belt, it seemed to add to the costume. On the way to work, I thought about the jacket I had on and decided that if I draped it over my shoulders, I could be Batman soccer mom, or Batman in the 'burbs! Plus, it makes a cape so... what?!?!
Courtney: I decided to dress as Lewis Robinson at sort of the last minute because I couldn't decide what to be and was scouring my movies for a costume I could wear with shorts. I was working from home and it was hot, so when I lit on Meet the Robinsons (one of my favorite movies), I decided I could invent a Lewis costume with red shorts, a white collared shirt, a blue sweater vest (I borrowed from my dad) and some glasses.
Day 3- Brian McCann and Jamie Sullivan
Courtney: The Braves made the playoffs this year (yay) so I got tickets to the first NL East Division Playoff game (which we lost, boo). I always wear my B. Mac jersey to Braves games so I was wearing it anyway and tossed my Braves hat on backwards like a catcher would do.
Mallory: I decided to be Jamie on Day 3 because I needed a simple costume that didn’t require me to wear any makeup. I was Jamie for a movie party we’d had a few weeks before so I didn’t have to think too much about what to wear. Easy and quick.
Mallory: As with Day 3, I needed a Day 4 costume that didn’t require a lot of fuss. So, as I lay in bed pondering my costume, I began thinking about my overalls. I’d seen some Halloween costumes on Pinterest of girls dressed like minions with overalls and yellow tube tops. Since I do not own a tube top anymore, I started digging through my old tank tops and found one that was yellow. It has monkeys on it so I had to turn it inside out. Then grab up my superman glasses and there you go. Insta minion.
Mallory: “Merry Christmas, Lizzie McGuire.” Who doesn’t remember that epic moment of television? Well… you’re all losers, then. Lizzie McGuire was one of the better Disney shows of the 00’s. Lizzie got into all sorts of madness and wore some crazy not-exactly-matching outfits. You just never knew what she was going to step out in next. But you could always count on her inner voice to wear the same thing every time. So when thinking of Day 6’s outfit, this seemed an excellent idea. Pink top + jeans + flip flops = awesome.
Courtney: "What are you wearing Jake from State Farm?" "Uh khakis." "She sounds hideous." "Well, you don't know me lady and I'm slamming!" Khakis and a red polo and poof, you're Jake from State Farm... or a Target employee... choose wisely.
Mallory: This year I began a TV watching endeavor, not unlike my Lost marathon. How I Met Your Mother is now one of my favorite shows and therefore I opted to dress like every main character. First up, Robin. Metro News 1 reporter, lover of guns.
Mallory: I knew I would dress like Spike at least once during my 31 days because… well, he’s pretty much my favorite TV character ever. From Buffy to Angel, Spike was sexy, funny, and pretty badass but with a caring side underneath. Who would not want to dress like him? Also, I had acquired a long leather coat from Goodwill a while back and just had to wear it again.
Courtney: I just love Blake Shelton because he sings fantastic songs and is very hilarious. If you don't believe me, watch The Voice. Blake frequently wears blue jeans and plaid shirts with cowboy boots, but what would distinguish this look from any other cowboy/country singer? Blake's deer track and barbed wire tattoo, of course. I replicated the ladybugs aka deer tracks and barbed wire as best I could with a marker and I was total BS!
Courtney: I happened upon a District 12 training shirt at Hot Topic a few years back on clearance so, of course, I bought it, and in order to become Katniss, I wore black running pants, boots, my mockingjay necklace, and I braided my hair. Boom! Girl on Fire (fire not included).
Mallory: Day 10’s costume was inspired by my pink pants. I never wear them much and definitely wanted to for a costume. I started searching and came up with a few options. But the easiest to put together that day was Baby Spice. Though she mostly wore dresses, they were usually pink. This was my take on her. Bonus is I still had some huge pink platforms from 1997 and a Spice Girl’s necklace.
Courtney: I am a pretty big Steelers fan, so naturally, I wanted a Steelers jersey and the one I finally decided on was Big Ben. This is sort of a cop out costume, but it was game day, so I wore it.
Mallory:If you've never seen The Mighty Ducks, you had no childhood. Or adulthood depending on how old you are. Banks was always my favorite. I always felt bad for Banks, having to transfer teams and deal with people who just didn’t like him. But he was a cool guy, turns out. We had talked about ordering Mighty Duck shirts for DragonCon once and I finally decided to order them.
Mallory: Because of my job, I have to dress business casual almost every day. So I wear a lot of dress pants. I was looking through my props this day and found my cool cop shades and a CSI badge. Well, I don't watch CSI regular, but I did watch CSI: Miami for a while. Horatio always dressed in suits and hey... dress pants! Easy enough.
Courtney: This was a tough day for a costume. I just couldn't decide what to be because I was going shopping with my mama, but it was hot, and I wanted to wear shorts and blah blah blah. I love the Divergent series, so it was pretty easy to wear a bunch of blue and glasses and become a smarty pants Erudite.
Mallory: Day 15 was one of those days that I just could not think of a good costume. I went to work feeling blah at my inability to make anything work. But that very night I had an Aaron Carter concert to attend, so I was determined to find a costume to wear to that. I pulled down my superhero shirt I hadn’t gotten the chance to wear yet and started pondering who I could be with that shirt. Big Bang Theory came to me, though I’ve only seen the show a few times. Leonard seemed the best choice for me.
Courtney: What what what what what what what what? I have recently developed a liking for Macklemore because he likes thrift shopping, baseball, and just seems like a cool dude in general. I poofed up my hair so I could rock a wolf on my noggin, then I wore some skinny jeans and a shirt. I borrowed my mom's fur coat and grabbed a big gulp looking cup then walked on some furniture and stood with a bike.
Mallory: In keeping with my appropriate work duds, I thought dressing like someone from The Office would be a good idea. I did some research and decided Pam would be a good choice. She wears a lot of skirts, Google showed me, and button ups. Easy enough.
Mallory: Days 17 and 18 were two more days I needed a simple costume requiring no makeup (one day I shall reveal why this is). I had already picked out one of my dad’s shirts I would use to be Marshall. I was just waiting for the right day when I didn’t have to work. So today was that day. For a little something extra, I decided to make a bar chart of my favorite pies.
Courtney: My mama decided to get rid of her velour track suits and I decided to save them in case I ever needed them for a costume. Then, I did need them for a costume. Mafiosos and their wives love these things!
Courtney: I couldn't come up with a costume on this day either. Then, I decided I could be frequent rabble rouser and web show star Sam Puckett. She sometimes dressed pretty normally and more in line with my normal clothes than the other iCarlians. I grabbed up my butter sock and went to being intimidating.
Mallory: I have also recently become obsessed with The Walking Dead. It seemed obvious that I should dress like one of them. Beth seemed the most obvious for me since we’re both blonde and young looking. Just wear a tank top, jeans, a necklace with a heart on it and rub some dirt on yourself. Good to go.
Mallory: I pretty much love all things Joss Whedon. So dressing like a doll from Dollhouse was an easy and necessary costume. Perfect for a Saturday. All you need is a tank top and pajama pants. Sierra just happened to be the doll with blonde hair so she’s who I chose to be.
Courtney: I wanted to be all intellectual and dress as book characters, but not too intellectual because those folks can be annoying. In order to cut down on being too intellectual, I chose books from my childhood that I loved. Maniac Magee wore sneaks, jeans, and a hoodie. Easy peezy!
Courtney: Generally, I prefer to be Miss Scarlett when we dress as Clue characters, but I didn't want to wear a dress to the musical, so I put on blue and wore my peacock looking necklace with some classy glasses to become Mrs. Peacock.
Mallory: Clue has always been one of my favorite board games. So when the opportunity to see Clue: the Musical arose, I was first in line to buy the tickets. Well, not really but you get the point. Day 20 we ventured out to see this production and thought it fitting to dress like a Clue character. Since I own a lot of purple, I decided to be Professor Plum.
Mallory: Go go Power Rangers! I had bought my red Power Ranger shirt earlier in the year, so one day when I could think of no costume to wear to work, I decided to be a Power Ranger for zumba. I was super awesome that day.
Courtney: I wanted to be Gru so bad because I love Despicable Me, but alas, I couldn't find a scarf. Then, I found one and made my minion tag along with me. One of my coworkers suggested that I needed a humped back, so I found a small pillow and stuffed it into my jacket.
Courtney: Monsters, Inc. is a great movie. With the prequel coming out this year, Mike and Sully costumes were all the rage. However, I chose to go less mainstream and opted to be Roz, the crotchety keeper of the files and knowledge at Monsters, Inc. She has a mostly khaki body and wore a red sweater, so I wore khaki clothes and stuck a packet of makeup rounds in my hair that I pulled my hair up around.
Mallory: Day 22, the last book in the Divergent series, Allegiant, came out. In honor of this occasion, I decided to dress as a Candor. Just a general member of Candor society, I suppose. Christina and I would have been friends. Or perhaps I would be more like Peter and people would all detest me. :0
Mallory: As Buffy is my favorite show and Sarah Michelle Geller was always one of my idols growing up, I knew I must dress as Buffy one day. Today was that day. Bring on the red pants! Also having a stake as a prop is a nice touch. My dad made mine for me. :)
Courtney: I recently got caught up on Arrow and I love Felicity because she is awkward and goofy and perfect for Oliver! Team Olicity!!! She mostly dresses like she works in an office, but always with the red lipstick and glasses. Of course, it was imperative that I be surrounded by technology.
Courtney: House generally wore jeans, a collared shirt (in the earlier seasons), a blazer, and sweet Nike Shox. He also walked with a cane and took Vicodin on the reg. House call!
Mallory: Any fan of One Tree Hill knows the name Chris Keller. Also fans of Oz but that is not the Chris Keller I am trying to dress as. If that were the case, I’d just wear my birthday suit and call it a day. Anyway, who didn’t love the egotistical, hilarious, singer/songwriter Chris? Maybe diehard Naley fans or Brucas fans or morons. But I loved Chris Keller. When I was trying to figure out a costume for Day 24, I was looking in my closet and spotted my Tyler Hilton shirt. And, I thought, my brother has a guitar case! Just put a blazer over a t-shirt, grab my guitar and my shades and there you go. Chris Keller’s work is done.

Anyone can wear a costume on October 31st or another day or two to celebrate this most spookiest of holidays, but who among us will wear a costume every day? These guys. I have a Batman t-shirt and decided to pair it with my black skirt. I was tempted to wear my black cuddly duds (aka leggings) and black leather boots to make it truly authentic, but that seemed a bit too much for a working stiff. On the way to work, I thought about the jacket I had on and decided that if I draped it over my shoulders, I could be Batman soccer mom, or Batman in the 'burbs! Plus, it makes a cape so... what?!?!
Mallory: What, you may ask, would inspire
someone to dress as the widely renowned Mr. Grey? Could it be that I love 50
Shades? Nope. In fact, those books earn a 5 out of 10 on my likeness scale. Ana
annoyed me, Christian pissed me off and unlike fans of this series, I actually
enjoy plot. But I digress… The real reason I dressed like Christian was not
because I longed to be like him or have him for my very own (never would I want
someone like that) but simply because the idea struck me the night before our
adventure into costumes began. I was perusing through my jewelry and found a
necklace with handcuffs. Why do I have a necklace with handcuffs
on it? I’m pretty sure I bought it from Claire’s off the 10 for 10 rack (see my
upcoming blog, What Happened to 10 for 5?). So of course the first thing I
thought of was 50 Shades because it’s not like I read a ton of hard core
erotica. And for most of the books Christian wears a white shirt and gray pants
and I just happened to have both. So costume numero uno was born.
Day
2- Superman and Lewis Robinson
Mallory: I got the inspiration to be Superman
from a notebook I’ve had for going on 15 years. As you can see in the picture,
it is a Superman S. The only other thing I needed was a red and blue outfit
(I’m thinking of Smallville where Clark never wore any other colors ever) and
some glasses. Check!

Then grab up my superman glasses and there you go. Insta minion.
Courtney: I needed a costume that I could work out in since I had Glow Zumba that night. I had some pink leggings that were presumed to glow in black light (they kind of did) and I just paired them with some workout shorts and my Pink Ranger shirt. Go go Power Rangers!
Courtney: As a die hard Georgia Bulldog fan, I wear my David Pollack jersey every game day (not this one of course, this is for away games only). It was a Georgia Saturday and I thought I would just put on my grey shorts (aka silver britches) and my cleats in order to make a David Pollack costume.
Mallory:I love the Vampire Diaries and therefore thought I must incorporate a VD costume into the 31 days. The one that came to me was Caroline Forbes. She’s blonde and mostly wears skinny jeans andblouses cute tops. (Side note- Blouses it a weird word to me. It
makes me think old lady shirts.) I had a baby shower to attend this day and I
thought Caroline’s attire would be appropriate.

Day
6- Taylor Swift and Lizzie McGuire
Courtney: I watched several Taylor Swift videos because I thought surely she wore a simple outfit I could match one day and whilst watching the video for "Mine" I saw this outfit that Taylor wore when they were moving boxes. I decided I could easily replicate it with blue jean shorts, a plaid shirt, and a white undershirt. I left my hair in a ponytail, though is wasn't nearly as curly, to come as close to T. Swizzle as possible.

Day
7- Elizabeth Masterson and Dean Portman
Mallory: You may not recognize the name right
off, but Elizabeth is a character right out of one of my favorite movies. Think
Mark Ruffalo, Reese Witherspoon, ghosts, flowers, and cola. I’m talking about Just Like Heaven of course. It’s a cute
rom-com with a predictable yet satisfying ending. And Elizabeth wears the same
outfit pretty much the whole movie.
Courtney: Ducks fly together! Dean Portman (though not in as much of the Mighty Ducks trilogy as many other characters) was my favorite Mighty Duck because he was a bash brother, he gave his all to his new team, and he came back in the nick of time to save them in the third movie like a true hero. He's super awesome and that is why I chose to get the Portman shirt when we ordered Mighty Ducks shirts. Though Dean never actually had a green Ducks shirt (as far as I remember), it works and I paired it with a black bandanna with skulls on it to complete my Bash Brother ensemble.

9- Spike and Blake Shelton
Mallory: I knew I would dress like Spike at least once during my 31 days because… well, he’s pretty much my favorite TV character ever. From Buffy to Angel, Spike was sexy, funny, and pretty badass but with a caring side underneath. Who would not want to dress like him? Courtney: I happened upon a District 12 training shirt at Hot Topic a few years back on clearance so, of course, I bought it, and in order to become Katniss, I wore black running pants, boots, my mockingjay necklace, and I braided my hair. Boom! Girl on Fire (fire not included).

Bonus is I still had some huge pink platforms from 1997 and a Spice Girl’s necklace.
Day
11- Pinterest Outfit and Dean Winchester
Courtney: I am on Pinterest probably way more than I should be, but no more than, you know, every other person out there. They always have cute outfits so I composed a cute outfit with my pink pants, a polka dot shirt, and my owl necklace. However, in order to prove I was a Pinterest outfit and not just my normal cute self, I created the thingies that pop up when you interact with a pin on Pinterest and attached them to pipe cleaners that I stuck in my hair.
Mallory: I’m an avid Supernatural watcher so when I first got the idea for 31 days of costumes, I knew I wanted to be Dean. (I love Sam, too, but being Dean is easier.) I found some costume ideas on Pinterest but I knew I had a jacket that was round about the same color as his. I ordered his famous necklace from Amazon to complete my look.

Day
12- Joel Goodson
It’s Amber’s wedding day and about
time to get started. We'd been racking our brains trying to think of a costume for
the day that would blend in to the wedding. The idea struck that morning as we were grabbing our button up shirts to get our hair fixed in. Who else wears a white
button-up and not much else? Tom Cruise in Risky
Business! We had sunglasses and socks. We did choose to wear PJ and jean shorts
instead of undies to keep it less scandalous for our Facebook friends. Grab up
some household items and do a few slides across the floor and you’re basically
him.
Day
13- Ben Roethilisberger and Adam Banks
Courtney: I am a pretty big Steelers fan, so naturally, I wanted a Steelers jersey and the one I finally decided on was Big Ben. This is sort of a cop out costume, but it was game day, so I wore it.

I love the Divergent series, so it was pretty easy to wear a bunch of blue and glasses and become a smarty pants Erudite.
Day
15- Meredith Grey and Leonard Hofstadter
Courtney: Scrubs... basically you can wear scrubs and be whoever you want to be. I probably could have worn scrubs every single say and been 31 different doctors. However, wanting to be as close to my inspiration as possible, I chose someone with blondeish hair like me and that was either Meredith or Izzie and I don't like Izzie. Meredith it was.

18-Sam Puckett and Beth Greene
Courtney: I couldn't come up with a costume on this day either. Then, I decided I could be frequent rabble rouser and web show star Sam Puckett. She sometimes dressed pretty normally and more in line with my normal clothes than the other iCarlians. I grabbed up my butter sock and went to being intimidating.

Christina and I would have been friends. Or perhaps I would be more like Peter and people would all detest me. :0
Day
23- Buffy Summers and Felicity Smoak
Mallory: As Buffy is my favorite show and Sarah Michelle Geller was always one of my idols growing up, I knew I must dress as Buffy one day. Today was that day. Bring on the red pants! Also having a stake as a prop is a nice touch. My dad made mine for me. :)

Day
25- Holden and Bernadette Rostenkowski
Mallory: This may quite possibly be my most
difficult-to-figure-out costume. But as I searched through my movies, looking
for inspiration this day 25 morning, I spotted Cabin in the Woods. A very funny and very awesome scary movie.
Unlike anything you have ever seen. So I opted to be someone from this movie
and Holden’s outfit was the easiest to construct in the 20 minutes I had before I had
to leave for work. Ergo, my geeky red look.
Courtney: I had to make a presentation for work on this day and so I had to look nice. Bernadette normally wears flowery dresses with her cardigan and tights, but my striped dress matched better. I wore the glasses all through my presentation and the security checkpoint to get to it. My dedication did not go so far as to talk like Bernadette, but I still get major points.

Mallory: Also brought to you by master creator Joss
Whedon, day 26’s costume: Dr. Horrible. If you have not seen Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog… well
just go watch it now. It’s on Youtube. Or was last time I checked. This mini
web series is funny and heartbreaking, classic Joss Whedon. The 26th
was the day of our annual Halloween party so this costume had to be the best of
all 31 days. I had my grandmother make me a girly version of an Evil League of
Evil Horrible costume and it turned out awesome. I intend to wear this to
DragonCon next year.
Courtney: Also also brought to you by master creator Joss Whedon is Firefly. Firefly was Whedon's short-lived (ugh, Fox, thanks a lot) space western that spun off a movie called Serenity when the Browncoats (this is what we dedicated fans call ourselves) continued campaigning for the show after it was over. Our party had a Whedonverse theme and as Captain Mal is very recognizable and the head of the Serenity crew, I opted to be him. Mallory found the brown coat at Goodwill and I found the shirt there as well. I finally found some suspenders and Mallory's dad loaned me the belt holster and prop gun. My aunt Lois sewed brown stripes onto my khakis and my brown boots completed the ensemble. I aim to misbehave.

Day
27- Murphy and Connor MacManus
Courtney came up with the idea to be
the Boondock Saints one day. She
bought/made us some rosaries and drew us some nice tats on our hands. All we
needed were black coats, sunglasses, and gloves and we were basically
vigilantes. Side note, Mallory tweeted this pic to Sean Patrick Flannery who
re-tweeted it. This is the most we have been favorited on Twitter ever.
Mallory: You were probably wondering when I
would get to the rest of the HIMYM cast. That time is now. I pondered on the
best way to be Lily, thinking I could put handprints on my shirt or just dress
in skinny jeans and nice top. But then, on a Sunday night, the idea suddenly
came to me. Marshpillow! How could this not have occurred to me sooner? I
grabbed up a pillow, put a flannel shirt on it, and hugged it a lot. Costume
complete.
Courtney: I love the Night Huntress world created by Jeaniene Frost. Vlad Tepesh is one of my favorite characters. Don't call him Dracula. I put some heads on stakes and lit my hand on fire with my powers (and a little help from Google) and walked around like a thousand year old vampire king all day.

Day
29- Miranda Lambert and Ted Mosby
Courtney: I was Blake and so naturally, I had to be Miranda because she is a total badass. I had to dress up for a work breakfast, but I wanted to be in costume because that makes it more fun. I decided to be the bad Miranda from "Only Prettier" so I put on some red lipstick and poofed up my hair again. Yes, those are five inch heels.
Mallory: I struggled with how to be Ted. I thought of wearing a sweater with a collared shirt underneath, but I didn’t have any sweaters right for that. I tried several looks but nothing seemed good enough. So I inevitably settled for a plaid button-up over a t-shirt. I kinda had to edit my prop as I had an umbrella but not a yellow one. Also you cannot find yellow umbrellas anywhere. Except on Amazon where they are crazy expensive. Oh well, it works.

Courtney: I wanted to be another book character, so I decided to be Turtle from The Westing Game. I love this book and it was one of my favorites in elementary school. She's an approximately 13 year old shinkicker who dressed up as a witch for Halloween. Her hair was always braided and 13 year olds today love Cobra Starship. Mallory had a witch hat and bought me a broom for this part of the costume. No actual shins were kicked in the taking of these photos.
Mallory: Time to break out the pink pants again. I had a trunk-or-treat this night and Barbie seemed like a good costume for that and for work. I put on as much pink as I could, including makeup and even a very stylish 90’s era headband. I also still had part of a Barbie necklace so I was able to fix it up to tie my look all together.

Day
31- Barney Stinson and Daryl Dixon
Mallory: On the final day of costumes,
Halloween day itself, I wore one of my favorite costumes: Barney. A few weeks
back I had purchased a ducky tie with the intention of wearing it on Halloween
to work. So when we began the 31 days of costumes, I already knew what my final
costume would be. The trick-or-treaters didn’t know who I was, which is just as
well because kids probably shouldn’t be watching that show anyway. But people
at work loved my tie and I had fun wearing it!
Courtney: Since I have been appointed the Chief Awesomeness Officer at my work, we have dressed up for Halloween and had treats and fun. Because I knew being Daryl would be one of my most extreme costumes, I saved it for last. I also thought it would be more acceptable to bring weapons on Halloween day. I used lipstick and eyeliner to create by wounds and the blood dripping down my neck. I bought my necklace and vest at Spencers and borrowed the crossbow from Mallory's dad. The ear necklace seemed to gross people out, but that's cool. I looked like an asskicker all day and I think Daryl would've been proud. Between the two of us, Mallory and I made this last day Legen... wait for it... Daryl.
