Doctor Who

For Hillary's 27th birthday, she decided she wanted to have a Doctor Who themed party. So what do we do? Take to Pinterest of course. And here's what happened...

DECORATIONS
We knew there were a few must haves. Hillary really wanted a TARDIS for the party. So here were the options: buy one (we've seen cardboard and tent-like ones for sale) or make one. We opted for the latter after Mallory talked her dad into helping. And by helping we mean doing most of the work while we watched.

It turned out really awesome! Our TARDIS wasn't actually the correct size for a couple of reasons. For one, we would have had to buy a lot more wood, which could get expensive. Secondly, the thing had to be transported across town and if it was really large and heavy, we wouldn't be able to move it.  Here are a few pictures of the process.

He used thin lightweight wood though I honestly couldn't tell you what kind. We bought it at Home Depot! We did most of the painting, though dad helped with that too.

Our other craft project was building a Dalek. We used foam board and duct tape to build the body. Other items used were a strainer and small paper cups (the head), a paint roller, a plunger, a whisk, and Christmas tree ornaments,

We cut only partway through the foam board so that the pieces would bend but were still attached to one another.

We used paint Mallory had bought for the ticket booth at Halloween to paint it. It was regular wall paint but it actually worked really well. The only problem was that if you scratched it at all, the paint would come off.

After we got the Dalek painted, we hot glued all of the pieces together, including hot gluing the ornaments on the bottom. Tip- when cutting plastic ornaments in half, cut a little more than halfway around directly on the line that runs across the ball, then pull the rest apart. It worked for me anyway.

We decided after we had the Dalek put together that the top middle layer should be black so we used regular craft paint to paint it.

Lastly, we bought black pipe insulation from Home Depot to put around the bottom. It was only around $2.

We used Microsoft Publisher to make a few other decorations. We had a crack in our universe and a weeping angel for the door.

Since Hillary's birthday was so close to Christmas, Mallory also thought it would be a cool idea to decorate her tree accordingly. She bought dark blue ornaments and made a few of her own.

She also cut out bananas and bow ties, hot glued them to pipe cleaners, and wrapped them around the branches for additional decoration. Hillary bought some 3D glasses for the party so we put some of those on the tree as well.

For the tree topper, we thought it would be awesome to have a weeping angel. A co-worker gave Mallory an old tree topper angel she had that she didn't use anymore. We spray painted it with stone spray paint and hot glued its hands to its face.

FOOD

For food we decided to go with a few Doctor Who classics.

Fish Sticks and Custard (Chicken sticks and pudding)

Adipose Marshmallows

Fruit Dalek

Blue Peanut Butter Cupcakes

Peanut butter cupcakes aren't really Doctor Who related but that's what Hillary wanted. And we did make them blue! We decided to decorate the cupcakes to represent every doctor. Unfortunately, we decided this too late and the printer was almost out of ink. Oh well.

We also made bow tie pasta and had bananas.

GAMES

We didn't have many Doctor Who themed games, but we did convert Mallory's Guess Who boards into Doctor Guess Who. (We played 10 rounds of this.) You can find the template here: http://karenkavett.com/blog/943/making-of-guess-who-doctor-who-edition.php#f

COSTUMES

Of course we all had to dress up for the occasion and who better to dress as than the Doctor himselves and Captain Jack? Our sonic screwdrivers and vortex manipulator really brought it all together. :)

Allons-y!
