Murder Mystery Party

Ever get tired of regular old parties? Just a bunch of friends getting together for game night or to watch movies… Well, we did. So in order to prevent the monotony of plain jane parties, we have opted to theme every party we host. Themes can be a fun way to spice up a boring party. This series of blogs will delve into our world of crazy cool parties.

We'll start with a classic.

Murder Mystery Party
As fans of murder mystery games such as Clue, a murder mystery party had always seemed like fun. But sitting around playing Clue all night would not suffice. So what should we do to make it more entertaining? Be up and moving? Have real weapons?

We decided to design our
own live action version of the game. We made our own suspect cards, weapon cards, and room cards. Then we set up spaces on the floor using playing cards and tape, invited some friends over and spent an hour or so moving around Courtney’s house, making accusations. Uma Thurman, with a machete, in the bathroom.

A couple of years later, we decided we wanted to have another murder mystery party. But this time, we would make it a bigger event. We randomly acquired a Nancy Drew mystery game from Goodwill and decided this would be great for a party. But we also wanted to play another round of live action Clue. This time we played the regular game, using suspects such as Miss Scarlet and Professor Plum. (Note-Construction paper makes a good space marker.)

But because we love to dress up, we assigned everyone a character to be. Dressing up is half the fun of having themed parties, after all.

Though the Nancy Drew game was made for kids 12 and under, we still had fun running around the house, chasing after an unknown suspect for an hour. And live action Clue was entertaining once more.

With the right group of people, you can make even the most lame games fun. Just get everyone to be as dramatic as possible and be sure to take lots of photos while solving the mystery, so others can be jealous of you.
