Spooky Candy Land

Halloween is a time of year when people feel more acceptable wearing a costume. So never fail to take advantage of this feeling. Have a party with a crazy cool theme that involves the kind of dressing up "normal" people aren't usually comfortable with.

In 2011, our Halloween party theme was Candyland. But not just regular Candyland because that would be boring.

We decorated Mallory's house like a Candyland game board (scary Halloween style) and each became a psychotic version of one of the characters.

As you may notice from some of the pictures featured, each character's section of the game board was decorated to match their creepy costume. Jolly's realm (top left) was overtaken with spiders and Jolly herself seems to be suffering from a few spider bites. To decorate this section, we made a simple spider out of a trash bag and some tissue paper. Most spiders on the wall are made from foam pieces and cut to look like gum drops, Jolly's claim to fame. Jolly's costume is a basic tank and skirt with plastic spiders pinned to them. Fake spider webs make a belt and neck-piece to complete the ensemble.

Grandma Nut (top center) is not-so-secretly a witch. Surrounding her toxic peanuts is a witch's pot and magic potions (made from random bottles found around the house filled with water). All you need to be Grandma Nut is a long dress, bonnet, and apron. Horns and green face paint really pull it all together.

The true bad guy in Candyland is next. Lord Licorice (top right) is a creature of the night. All you really need for this is a black and red outfit, cape of licorice (made from red yarn) and some fangs. Fake coffins are also good. Right below LL you'll find Queen Frostine. An ice queen indeed. It would seem the poor queen froze to death and now peruses her frozen kingdom awaiting her next victim. Grab some fake snowflakes from the Dollar Tree and make a ghost from a white trash bag to float amongst the snow. You'll need a blue and white dress and wig, some white body paint, and of course a crown of icicles.

Princess Lolly (bottom center) sits amid a field of jack-o-lantern lollipops. You can purchase these plastic pumpkins for a dollar or two at Walmart around Halloween. Just drill a hole in the bottom big enough to fit a long dowel rod through and there you go. For the costume, simply sew (or get your mom to as Mallory did) some fabric circles onto a yellow dress. Then hot glue some lollipop sticks on, grab a pink/purple curly wig, some white body paint, black lipstick and you're good to go. Ms. Mint (bottom left) is to be feared, with her pointy sharp candy-canes.  You can find candy-canes at the Dollar Tree near Christmas time (you may need to plan ahead somewhat). Bloody cloth and red paint splatter can add to the murderous feel. For the costume, it's all reds and pinks. Striped tights are an awesome add on. And don't forget the bloody red cheeks.

And any Candyland party would not be complete without some Candyland kids roaming about. So for those friends who don't want to go all out with their dress, all they need is a red shirt and some overalls.

Along with those decorations, we also put colorful spaces on the floor to give the room a game board feel. (Construction paper!) And if you want to incorporate the game pieces, cutting large versions of them from cardboard and hanging them from the ceiling is an idea.

Now decorating and dressing up is cool, but we like to take things one step further. At our party, we decided to play a live action version of the game. (We’re all about live action!) Drawing cards and moving around space by space may not seem exciting, but trust us… it can get crazy. Especially when Macy gets sent back to Plumpy. ;)

Take turns drawing the cards from the deck and play as many times as you like. (We played like 5.) And the good thing about this game is that everyone can play at the same time. There are more character roles in the game so all of your friends can join in on the fun! And even if they think it sounds lame at first, they will enjoy themselves before it's over. (Candy cocktails are also good for this party theme. If you're of appropriate age, of course. This may also make the game more fun. Just a thought.)
